What do gold medal Olympic Swimmers like Duncan Goodhew, Rebecca Adlington and Adam Peaty all have in common – apart from a gold medal? They all love to swim. A recent article in the Daily Telegraph quoted Duncan Goodhew as saying “A good day is a one swim day, a great day is a two swim day.” Meanwhile, Rebecca Adlington explained that swimming was her relaxation.
However, the Olympic Swimmers are not alone in using swimming for sport, health, fitness and happiness. Athletes such as Cristiano Ronaldo, triathlete, Alistair Brownlee and sailor, Shirley Robertson also include swimming as part of their fitness routine, not only for its low impact exercise but also as a form of relaxation.
Swimming provides a total body workout. This develops strength and cardiovascular fitness. Many athletes turn to aquatic fitness as a way to cross train for other sports. Swimming increases stamina and breath control. As a low impact sport, swimming is easier on the hips, ankles, knees and back.
